The Three Musketeers: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

por Alexandre Dumas

"We read The Three Musketeers to experience a sense of romance and for the sheer excitement of the story," reflected Clifton Fadiman. "In these violent pages all is action, intrigue, suspense, surprise--an almost endless chain of duels, murders, love affairs, unmaskings, ambushes, hairbreadth escapes, wild rides. It is all impossible and it is all magnificent."

First published in 1844, Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling epic chronicles the adventures of D'Artagnan, a gallant young nobleman who journeys to Paris in 1625 hoping to join the ranks of musketeers guarding Louis XIII. He soon finds himself fighting alongside three heroic comrades--Athos, Porthos, and Aramis--who seek to uphold the honor of the king by foiling the wicked plots of Cardinal Richelieu and the beautiful spy "Milady."

"Dumas will be read a hundred, nay, three hundred years on," wrote John Galsworthy. "His greatest creation is undoubtedly D'Artagnan, type at once of the fighting adventurer and of the trusty servant, whose wily blade is ever at the back of those whose hearts have neither his magnanimity nor his courage. Few, if any, characters in fiction inspire one with such belief in their individual existences. . . . To one who made D'Artagnan all shall be forgiven." Clifton Fadiman agreed: "Dumas enjoyed writing his stories. . . . The pleasure he must have felt in
creating D'Artagnan's troubles and triumphs flashes out of these pages. . . . Dumas rampaged through the history of France, inventing, changing, distorting--doing whatever was needed to produce a tale to hold the reader breathless."

The Three Musketeers

por Book 1

In seventeenth-century France, a daring young man defends the queen’s honor and tests his skills against the best swordsmen of the day

D’Artagnan journeys to Paris armed with nothing but his sword, his courage, and a burning desire to prove his mettle as a member of King Louis XIII’s elite guardsmen. A swashbuckling corps of gentlemen rogues, the Musketeers live to antagonize Cardinal Richelieu and sweep every woman in France off her feet. Before d’Artagnan can join their ranks, however, he must distinguish himself on the field of battle.

On his first day in the capital, d’Artagnan accidentally offends the honor of three dashing Musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—and agrees to duel each one in turn. But before they can match steel, the combatants are interrupted by the cardinal’s guards, embroiling d’Artagnan in complex affairs of state, dangerous court intrigues, and a sinister battle against the wily and seductive spy Milady de Winter.

A richly detailed historical novel and one of the greatest adventure stories ever told, The Three Musketeers is a masterwork of Western literature.

The Count of Monte Cristo

por Alexandre Dumas

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

A popular bestseller since its publication in 1844, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the great page-turning thrillers of all time. Set against the tumultuous years of the post-Napoleonic era, Alexandre Dumas’s grand historical romance recounts the swashbuckling adventures of Edmond Dantès, a dashing young sailor falsely accused of treason. The story of his long imprisonment, dramatic escape, and carefully wrought revenge offers up a vision of France that has become immortal. As Robert Louis Stevenson declared, “I do not believe there is another volume extant where you can breathe the same unmingled atmosphere of romance.”

Twenty Years After

por Book 2

D’Artagnan and his swashbuckling friends reunite to vanquish forces of evil and injustice in the sequel to The Three Musketeers

Two decades after a brash young adventurer teamed with master swordsmen Athos, Porthos, and Aramis to defeat Cardinal Richelieu and his seductive spy, Milady de Winter, France stands on the brink of civil war. Inspired by Oliver Cromwell’s persecution of King Charles I in England, bloodthirsty crowds threaten the youthful monarch, Louis XIV; his regent mother, Queen Anne; and their devious chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin.

To protect the sovereignty of the crown, Mazarin commissions d’Artagnan to find the three Musketeers and return them to the queen’s service. The mission takes on an even greater urgency when the vengeful Mordaunt, son of Milady, picks up the quartet’s trail. From a dramatic duel in London to an explosive showdown on the English Channel to a climactic confrontation in the streets of Paris, d’Artagnan and his friends wage an epic battle on behalf of truth, honor, and justice.

THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO: Classic French Literature

por Book 9

The Count of Monte Cristo  is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (père) completed in 1844. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet.

The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815–1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. It centres around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature.

The book is considered a literary classic today. According to Luc Sante, "The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western civilization's literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood."

The Count of Monte Cristo: The Three Musketeers ; The Man in the Iron Mask

por Alexandre Dumas

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Count of Monte Cristo + The Three Musketeers + The Man in the Iron Mask (3 Unabridged Classics)” contains 3 unabridged classic books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, first published in serial form from August 1844 until January 1846. The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean, and in the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838. It begins from just before the Hundred Days period  and spans through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. It focuses on a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty.

The Three Musketeers  is a novel by Alexandre Dumas,  first published in serial form in 1844. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all", a motto which is first put forth by d'Artagnan.

The Man in the Iron Mask climactically concludes the epic adventures of the three Musketeers. The Man in the Iron Mask is a name given to a prisoner arrested as Eustache Dauger in 1669 or 1670, and held in a number of jails, including the Bastille and the Fortress of Pignerol. He was held in the custody of the same jailer, Bénigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, for a period of 34 years. The possible identity of this man has been thoroughly discussed and has been the subject of many books, because no one ever saw his face, which was hidden by a mask of black velvet cloth.

Alexandre Dumas, père ( 1802 – 1870) was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure which have made him the most widely read French author in the world. Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays, which were successfully produced from the first. He also wrote numerous magazine articles and travel books.
