Blood And Sand

por Vicente Blasco Ibañez

Vincente Blasco Ibanez in Blood and Sand, wrote a novel that can never lose its popularity because it presents a blazing picture of Spanish life as it can be lived only in Spain. A life that was flaming, tempestuous, fierce and magnificent while it lasted a life of heroes and idol worship, of hate and love in a setting of gorgeous beauty. It is the story of one of the world’s most fearless men — men who defy death in the arena for love and fame.

From the lowest ranks of poverty to unprecedented heights of riches and popular acclaim—thus was the career of Juan Gallardo, Spanish bull fighter. In telling his story, Ibanez has achieved a novel even more dramatic and powerful than his legendary Four Horsemen. From his boyhood Juan longed to be a bull fighter and, as he climbs the ladder step by step, the reader lives with him in the very atmosphere of the arena. No detail of the picture is spared—one can see and almost hear the actual battle—the crowds—the many characters that stream through the pages. And Juan himself, with his vanities, his superstitions, his daring attacks, his wounds and recoveries, emerges as real, vital and colorful as the sport to which he and many others dedicated their lives.

Short Stories by the Generation of 1898/Cuentos de la Generación de 1898: A Dual-Language Book

por Miguel de Unamuno

The generation of Spanish artists known as the 98ers, who renounced politics and sought their country's true spirit within its landscape, culture, and character, are well represented here by thirteen stories by five outstanding authors. Four of the stories are by Miguel de Unamuno, the spiritual leader of the Generation of 1898. Among the other authors included here. Ramón del Valle-Inclán was a chief representative of modernismo fiction. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, one of the best-known of these writers (though not usually regarded as an authentic 98er), was a keen observer of peasant life. Pío Baroja, sometimes called the foremost Spanish novelist of the twentieth century, wrote a virile, unadorned prose whose style is reputed to have influenced Hemingway. And "Azorín" (José Martinez Ruiz), represented here with a short novel, has an impressionistic and elliptical style that has been described as a literary counterpart to abstract painting.
This dual-language edition features an informative introduction and ample footnotes, making it not only a pleasure to read but also a valuable learning and teaching aid for students and teachers of Spanish literature.

By the Horns

por Ali Villaverde

Spain, the dawn of the twentieth century. Week after week, hundreds of thousands of Spaniards flock to bullfights across the country. Bullfighters are the nation's great idols. Their feats—and calamities—make front-page news and dominate conversations in taverns and cafés. Juan Gallardo, a bullfighting-obsessed street urchin from Seville, proves himself a born torero by taking on battle-scarred bulls for the amusement of peasants at village festivals. His rise to riches and recognition as the nation's greatest matador is all but foretold. But in the aftermath of a torrid liaison with the stunning and enigmatic aristocrat Doña Sol and a run-in with a murderous bandit known as The Feather, Gallardo must battle demons far more daunting than the beasts he faces in the ring.
A classic story of courage, cruelty, celebrity and seduction, By the Horns captures the glamour and brutality of professional bullfighting and Spain as they were when they seized the imaginations of some of the twentieth century's greatest writers, from Ernest Hemingway to Gertrude Stein.

Estudios sobre novelistas clásicos. Mark Twain. Blasco Ibáñez. Pío Baroja. Joseph Roth

The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse

por Vicente Blasco Ibanez

Many authors have seen the Great War through the eyes of their own country. Senor Ibanez seems to see it through eyes that are world-wide in their sweep and with a mind that is very human and pitiful in its comprehension of the suffering and the heroism. 'The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' is a great novel, one of the three of four outstanding novels of the war. It is rich and varied in scene, human in its characterizations, interesting throughout, and, above all, refreshingly straightforward and conclusive on the subject of the Germans and their methods of warfare.
