400 quotes of Modern Philosophy: Nietzsche, Kant, Kierkegaard & Schopenhauer

por Nietzsche, Kant, Kierkegaard & Schopenhauer

The great figures of modern philosophy led generations to struggle with the most crucial of questions and break through a new understanding of conscience and existence.
Nietzsche's work is radical, sometimes violent, often ironic; it fascinates anyone bold enough to delve into it, exerted a profound influence on modern intellectual history, and covers a wide range of subjects.
Immanuel Kant is one of the most important figures of German philosophy, said to have affected a Copernican revolution in philosophy, akin to Copernicus' reversal of the age-old belief that the sun revolved around the earth, through his ground-breaking work on the structure of experience. He argued that human experience could not not be affected by the features of our minds; the consequence is that we can only experience a phenomenal world, as conveyed by our senses, and never the reality itself, which nobody has ever seen.
Schopenhauer shows what happens when great philosophy becomes somber, pessimistic, even brutal, while still resonating with a sarcastic laugh. He was among the first to contend that the universe is essentially not a rational place; in his most famous work, "The World as Will and Representation", he argues that the individuals of a species do not have as much free will as is ordinarily thought.
Søren Kierkegaard focused primarily on what it means to become a subject of one's existence, what feelings arise when faced with life choices, and the relation with God through faith. He is credited with numerous reflections on the three stages of life; he also questioned existential despair, absurdity and anxiety.
This audiobook is a careful compilation of essential quotes summarizing each one of the great masters' fundamental ideas.

For Nietzsche, the Will to Power was the fundamental principle of all life, a view that could be found in many of his earlier texts, including Thus Spoke Zarathustra: ‘Where there is life, there is also will: not, however, Will to Life, but - so teach I thee - Will to Power!’

Evil in Modern Thought: An Alternative History of Philosophy

por Susan Neiman

This compelling audiobook narrated by Susan Neiman sheds critical light on the problem of evil in modern thought, from the Inquisition to global terrorism

Evil threatens human reason, for it challenges our hope that the world makes sense. For eighteenth-century Europeans, the Lisbon earthquake was manifest evil. Today we view evil as a matter of human cruelty, and Auschwitz as its extreme incarnation. Examining our understanding of evil from the Inquisition to contemporary terrorism, Susan Neiman explores who we have become in the three centuries that separate us from the early Enlightenment. In the process, she rewrites the history of modern thought and points philosophy back to the questions that originally animated it.

Whether expressed in theological or secular terms, evil poses a problem about the world's intelligibility. It confronts philosophy with fundamental questions: Can there be meaning in a world where innocents suffer? Can belief in divine power or human progress survive a cataloging of evil? Is evil profound or banal? Neiman argues that these questions impelled modern philosophy. Traditional philosophers from Leibniz to Hegel sought to defend the Creator of a world containing evil. Inevitably, their efforts—combined with those of more literary figures like Pope, Voltaire, and the Marquis de Sade—eroded belief in God's benevolence, power, and relevance, until Nietzsche claimed He had been murdered. They also yielded the distinction between natural and moral evil that we now take for granted. Neiman turns to consider philosophy's response to the Holocaust as a final moral evil, concluding that two basic stances run through modern thought. One, from Rousseau to Arendt, insists that morality demands we make evil intelligible. The other, from Voltaire to Adorno, insists that morality demands that we don't.

Beautifully written and thoroughly engaging, this book tells the history of modern philosophy as an attempt to come to terms with evil. It reintroduces philosophy to anyone interested in questions of life and death, good and evil, suffering and sense. Featuring a substantial new afterword by Neiman that raises provocative questions about Hannah Arendt's take on Adolf Eichmann and the rationale behind the Hiroshima bombing, this Princeton Classics edition introduces a new generation of readers to this eloquent and thought-provoking meditation on good and evil, life and death, and suffering and sense.

Theodicy: a metaphilosophical investigation

por Laurie Calhoun

What happened to philosophy in the twentieth century? Laurie Calhoun has an answer to this question, but you are probably not going to like it—certainly not if you are comfortably ensconced in academia. That would make you one of “the experts” taken to task and whose “expertise” is unmasked in Theodicy. If, on the other hand, you left philosophy perplexed, wondering what was going on, why none of your professors bore any resemblance whatsoever to Socrates, then you might be relieved to discover that there are historical grounds for your perplexity. Something did happen. And it was big.
Theodicy is a radical work of metaphilosophy, which begins as a deceptively simple examination of the question: how would things be different, if perspectivism rather than absolutism were true? The answer to that metaphysical question leads to an endless proliferation of other questions—about art, language, science, psychiatry, society and dissent—culminating in a metaphilosophical theory about the nature of philosophy itself. An abridged version of this work was first published under the title Philosophy Unmasked: a skeptic’s critique, by the University Press of Kansas. The unabridged edition of Theodicy was published by Subversive Pulp Press in 2018 and is now available as an audiobook, narrated by the author.

Praise for Philosophy Unmasked (the abridged version of Theodicy):
"A bracing gale of fresh thinking about the meaning and significance of philosophy."
—Barry Allen, author of Truth in Philosophy

"Excellent and extraordinary."
—James Kellenberger, author of Relationship Morality

"A provocative statement of analytic philosophy’s current discontents."
—Babette E. Babich, author of Nietzsche's Philosophy of Science

The German lieutenant and other stories: August Strindberg Short Stories

por August Strindberg

August Strindberg belongs to the same generation of authors as the Russian Chekhov and the Norwegian Ibsen. Strindberg stands at the crossroads of such decisive influences as those of Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Schiller, Zola, Byron, or Freud's precursors such as Bernheim. He absorbed the aesthetic trends of his time, particularly naturalism. He is also a virtuoso painter, closely related to Edward Munch.  All his writings bear witness to his life and bear the traces of his crises, his struggles, his revolts against a society of rigid conformism. Through his struggles, he extracts from himself a dark work that explores the distress of modern man. Kafka, the expressionists, and many contemporary authors strongly claim his legacy. Franz Kafka: "I feel better because I read Strindberg. I don't read him to read him, but to snuggle up to his chest... The huge Strindberg. This rage, these pages won with the strength of the fist... " Four of his short stories are presented in this audiobook : The German Lieutenant; Unwelcome; Over-refinement; Paul & Peter.
